3-Way Solenoid Air Valve.
Normally Closed.
In an automatic transmission system, a shift solenoid is an electronically activated element which opens and closes some valves to control the transmission fluid flow from the gear shifts.
Shift solenoids have a spring-loaded plunger covered with a coil of wire.
Through the wire, the plunger makes contact with the engine sensors through electronic signals.
Those sensors indicate when transmission should shift gears according on speed.
When the shift solenoid is activated, the plunger will open some valves to permit the entry of transmission air flow.
That puts pressure on the clutches and bands originating that gear shifts.
While the shift solenoid does not receive power, the plunger remains closed.
